Smoothie Week Finale: Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Smoothie

Smoothie Week Finale: Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Smoothie

Creativity in the kitchen is both a blessing and a curse.

Sporadic moments of culinary genius allow me to concoct some insanely delicious and sometimes weird recipes.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

However, inventiveness can also make me forget how good the simplest recipes and flavors taste. When I returned from a Total Body group fitness class Thursday night, I wasn’t really in the mood for anything wacky or extravagant for dinner. That’s when the following protein smoothie came to the rescue!

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Smoothie

I apologize for the less-than-stellar photographs. Tropical Storm Andrea pretty much ruined my natural lighting for the day. Option A was to shoot pictures in dreary conditions on the porch. Option B was to capture this smoothie on camera under fluorescent lights in the kitchen.

Dismal porch lighting won.

After slurping one creamy spoonful, I couldn’t figure out why it took me so long to make this chocolate-covered strawberry protein smoothie.

I love chocolate. I love strawberries. Apparently putting the two together in a drink was like calculus to my brain. I think I’m smart, but moments like this make me feel pretty dumb.

Don’t be like me. Channel your common sense. Make this smoothie.

P.S. Thanks to all my fellow bloggers for participating in Smoothie Week. It was so popular that I might host a second week sometime this summer. Let me know if you’re interested in seeing more recipes! 🙂

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Smoothie

Serves One

Total Preparation Time: Two minutes . . max

Difficulty: Nonexistent

  • 1 medium-sized frozen banana (fresh works too, but frozen makes the smoothie thicker)
  • 1/2 of a small avocado or 1/4 of a large avocado (This ingredient is the key to creamy smoothies!)
  • 1/4 cup milk (I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk.)
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (I used Cabot Lowfat Plain Greek-Style Yogurt.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • One huge handful of fresh spinach
  • One heaping tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 scoop Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Proteinchocolate flavor (1/2 scoop of this brand is 70 calories; if you’re using a different brand, feel free to use more or less powder.)
  • Five large strawberries, sliced (fresh or frozen)

  1. Add the spinach, milk, yogurt, vanilla, whey protein and cocoa powder to a blender. Blend for 20 seconds. I find it’s best to stop and “pulse” every few seconds.
  2. Add the banana, avocado and strawberry slices to the blender and blend until all ingredients are well combined. The amount of time this takes depends of the quality and type of blender you own. I have a bullet blender, so it normally takes about 10 to 15 seconds of pulsing.
  3. Your smoothie should be pretty thick at this point. Add more milk to make the smoothie thinner, if desired.
  4. Sip through a straw, eat with a spoon, or add to a travel mug and enjoy on your way to work or school.
